What is Media Blasting?

You’ve heard of powerwashing—now, meet its slightly-more-dramatic big brother. Media blasting, also called “sandblasting” or“sodablasting,” is an environmentally-friendly way to remove the top layer of material from a huge variety of surfaces: concrete, brick, metal, wood—you name it.

How Does it Work?

In simple terms, a hose directs a pressurized stream of sand particles, sodium compounds, or other media towards the surface to be cleaned. When done properly, this stream of pressurized particles effectively removes the top layer of that surface without damaging the material underneath. This makes media blasting highly effective for removing graffiti, sealer, old paint, burn marks, etc. and restoring a surface to its original condition.

What’s the Benefit?

Effective

A media-blasted surface is clean, bare, and ready to be resealed, repainted, or otherwise refinished—or left alone entirely. Think of it as a “fresh start” for old, tired, or even vandalized installations.

Environmentally friendly

No acids or chemical corrosives are used in the cleaning process, which makes it an ideal option for use in exterior or large-scale applications. What’s more, many blast media are multi-use, recyclable, or biodegradable.

Versatile

A knowledgeable operator knows which media sizes and compounds work best for which applications, and can fine-tune the stripping effect by adjusting blast pressure. This means media blasting can be used to remove stains, grime, and paint from a variety of surfaces.

Abrasive Options

There are an enormous range of media types and grain sizes, and an experienced technician will know precisely which media—and what degree of blast pressure—will produce the best result for a project. Our trained operators always deploy the most appropriate media in order to get the results you want.

Below, we've assembled a sampling of the media types we use in client projects. We have access to a full range of media blasting abrasives beyond those described below.

Walnut Shells

  • All-natural blast media
  • Great for selectively removing the toplayer of a finish
  • Hard grit: Good for blast-cleaning softer (non-metallic) surfaces

Corncobs

  • Eco-friendly and biodegradable
  • Great for removing grime and paint
  • Softer grit: Good for graffiti removal from surfaces like wood and brick.

Sand Blend

  • Plentiful and versatile
  • Great multi-purpose abrasive
  • Depending on grain size, ideal for both metal and stone/concrete surfaces.

Sodium Bicarbonate

  • Gentle and effective
  • Great deodorizer and multi-purpose cleaner
  • A less-harsh general abrasive for applications when sandblasting is not ideal

Plastics

  • Light and soft
  • Wide range of grains sizes means wide range of applications
  • Great for jobs which need fast and thorough stripping

Glass Blend

  • Uniform and reusable
  • Produces a glossy, smooth surface
  • Moderate abrasive that leaves no residue or dust
